The Center for Coastal Protection and Restoration

You Can Inspire a Brighter Future for Our Coast

Your Support Will Make a Difference

Your gift today will help bring the Center for Coastal Protection and Restoration to life.

This is a watershed moment for the Coastal Federation, and one that will launch a new era of even greater community engagement. The new Center will feature a huge variety of hands-on education and engagement opportunities, including living shorelines, stormwater demonstrations, rain gardens, nature trails, guided tours, and events highlighting North Carolina’s incredible coastal resources. It also includes a dedicated classroom to support youth education programs and an Education and Event Center poised to host community events, professional workshops, forums on coastal issues, collaborative meetings, and much more.

Join the hundreds of visionaries who have pledged their support during our leadership phase in making a meaningful contribution to secure a healthy and vibrant coast for future generations. Your gift will support:

  1. The new headquarters of the Coastal Federation
  2. An Education and Event Center
  3. The Chris B. Smith Nature Trail
  4. Indoor and Outdoor Meeting & Education Spaces
  5. Sustainability Demonstrations, including green building features, living shorelines, and Nature-Based Stormwater Strategies
  6. A Communications Studio

Double Your Gift in December

A Generous supporter has posed a $100,000 all-or-nothing Matching Challenge through December 31.

This is a meaningful opportunity for your support to go twice as far – at a moment when it will have the greatest impact.

As construction on the Center nears completion, the buildings and outdoor classrooms are taking shape. We can already imagine the students walking into the classroom, the community gatherings in the Coastal Events Center, the hands-on activities along the shoreline, and the many moments of impact this Center will make possible.

Your support in this final stretch will help us complete construction and open the Center ready to serve our coast for years to come. But this investment is not just about finishing construction. It is about building the capacity to engage, educate, and inspire our communities on a whole new level.

With your help in this final phase, and with the power of the matching challenge, we will open a Center that will educate, inspire, and bring people together to protect and restore the coast we all love.

Holding Family Matching Challenge

Thank you to all our generous donors who gave in response to the 2024 Holding Family Matching Challenge. We are thrilled to have met this $100,000 dollar-for-dollar matching challenge by December 31, 2024. This support for the center, in honor of Todd Miller’s 42 years of coastal leadership, will speed this project toward completion.

New Giving Opportunities

The new Center offers a variety of outstanding giving and recognition options for donors.

Leadership Gifts

Gifts of $10,000 or more will be prominently recognized on a permanent indoor installation at the Center for Coastal Protection and Restoration. Additionally, the Federation will work with leadership donors to identify customizable recognition through the sponsorships of rooms, buildings, and other features. Please view our full Recognition Brochure for ideas and contact Sarah King at sarahk@nccoast.org or 252-393-8185 for more information.

COMING SOON:

The Memorial Forest

Memorial Forest Oak Tree

The Center for Coastal Protection and Restoration will offer a myriad of ways to connect with our coast, including inspiring grounds, bird-watching tours, and nature trails. Over the coming years, the Coastal Federation will transform much of this land back to native forest and wetland habitats by thinning weak and storm-damaged trees, planting native tree species, and restoring oyster and wetland habitat in a living shoreline. In time, the grounds will include four distinct coastal habitats: coastal wetlands, maritime forests, hardwood forested wetlands, and pine forests.

Join us in celebrating the rich natural heritage of the coastal plain with our Memorial Forest. Honor a friend or loved one by sponsoring a young or mature tree. Once planted, your tree will be marked with a permanent marker honoring your friend or loved one with their name, a short message, and the name of the donor. We’ll also send you a keepsake marker as a reminder of your special gift.

The Memorial Forest will open for donations in 2026.
