Green Drinks Morehead City
July 23 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Green Drinks is a casual monthly gathering for people who care about our coast. Whether you enjoy boating, beach days, or simply want to keep our waters clean and our communities strong, this is a relaxed space to connect with others, hear from local voices, and stay up to date on important coastal topics. Each month, we’ll highlight a different issue—like salt marsh restoration, oysters, or local happenings that impact the coast—and talk about how we can work together to protect the places we all enjoy. Grab a drink from the bar and join the conversation—these events are free and open to the public.

July’s Speaker | Dr. Joel Fodrie
Professor, Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Chair in Public Policy, Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences | Director, Institute of Marine Sciences | University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Joel Fodrie is an ecologist who studies the population dynamics of fishes and shellfish, as well as the community ecology of estuarine systems. His team’s funded/published research has emphasized: quantifying connectivity among marine populations and ecosystems; understanding the long-term effects of pulse and press disturbances using coastal fishes; exploring the natural history, restoration ecology, and climate response of coastal habitats; investigating the landscape ecology of seagrass meadows; and the ecosystem and socioeconomic dynamics of expanding shellfish mariculture operations.
Since 2010, he has also served as the primary caretaker of IMS’ long-term shark survey. He has contributed ~115 peer-reviewed papers that explore mechanisms of population and community variability within coastal ecosystems. These articles appear in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Ecology, and BioScience. Over the last decade, he has become increasingly engaged in coastal resource management in North Carolina.
Dr. Fodrie earned his PhD from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2006) and his BA in Biology and History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1999).
