CASTLE HAYNE – Titan America LLC announced today that the company has abandoned its controversial plans to build a cement plant here.

The plans, in the works since 2008, had drawn fire from environmental groups and area residents concerned about the proposed operation’s potential effects on air quality and groundwater. The plant was initially expected to gear up production in 2011 but ongoing legal battles with environmental groups, including the N.C. Coastal Federation, had stalled the company’s construction timeline. The legal hurdles were not mentioned in the Titan’s announcement.

Company officials said regional market conditions had changed and building a new plant was not worth the high cost.
