The state of North Carolina recognizes the positive impact oysters have on our economy. With the millions of acres of coastal waters in NC, the cultural heritage and environmental importance of oysters is also clear. In order to gain the support of local, state, and federal leadership in protecting and restoring oysters, the state launched the North Carolina Shellfish Initiative. Through the four goals of the initiative the state will promote sustainable seafood, aquaculture restoration and clean water. The four goals are creating jobs, protecting water quality, protecting shellfish health, and ensuring sustainable management. The Initiative was a collaborative effort between the State of North Carolina, the North Carolina Coastal Federation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, North Carolina Sea Grant, and the North Carolina Shellfish Growers Association.
