Permuda Island Reserve

In the 1980’s, the Coastal Federation worked with local fishermen and community members to permanently protect Permuda Island
in Stump Sound, across from Ocean City. The 65-acre island was slated for development of a 350-condominium complex and marina that would have polluted the area’s pristine waters and productive oyster beds. The island is now part of the N.C. Coastal Reserve & National Estuarine Research Reserve, where it will be forever protected.
Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve

In 2004, the Coastal Federation and the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries secured a $1 million grant from the N.C. Clean Water
Management Trust Fund to acquire the 52-acre Morris Landing property on Stump Sound across from Ocean City.
Since 2005, the Coastal Federation has worked to restore the site’s critical habitats and shellfish growing areas by installing
living shorelines and oyster reefs and by regularly removing marine debris.
Ocean City Rain Gardens

In 2024, the Coastal Federation worked with Ocean City residents to create rain gardens that collect rainwater so it
soaks into the ground and reduces stormwater runoff.
Planted with native species, they provide valuable habitat for birds and pollinators like bees and butterflies. This
project was made possible with financial support from Ocean Fest.
North Topsail Beach Conservation Lands

In 2024, the Coastal Federation accepted a donation of over 68 acres of land in North Topsail Beach that includes expansive salt
marsh and wetlands. The property, which is near the high-rise bridge, will never be developed, protecting its important coastal
habitats and water quality.
