Green Drinks Morehead City
October 9 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
Green Drinks is a casual monthly gathering for people who care about our coast. Whether you enjoy boating, beach days, or simply want to keep our waters clean and our communities strong, this is a relaxed space to connect with others, hear from local voices, and stay up to date on important coastal topics. Each month, we’ll highlight a different issue—like salt marsh restoration, oysters, or local happenings that impact the coast—and talk about how we can work together to protect the places we all enjoy. Grab a drink from the bar and join the conversation—these events are free and open to the public.

About October’s Speaker
Dr. Sam Athey
Vice Chair, Surfrider Bogue Banks
Sam has worked in the marine debris field for the last decade as a researcher, educator, and advocate for sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. Her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington focused on the sources and fate of microplastics and the chemical contaminants they carry in marine and freshwater environments. She went on to earn her doctorate at the University of Toronto, where her research expanded on the connections between plastic pollution and chemical exposure in aquatic systems.
Sam has taught as a lecturer in UNCW’s Department of Environmental Sciences and served as the lead marine debris instructor for UNCW’s MarineQuest program, where she inspired young people to see science in action. She now serves as Marine Plastics Program Manager at EarthEcho International, where she works to empower the next generation of ocean advocates and equip them with the knowledge and tools to address plastic pollution in their own communities from the local to international level.

Outside of her professional work, Sam volunteers as Vice Chair of the Surfrider Foundation Bogue Banks chapter, helping to advance community-driven campaigns for clean water and healthy beaches. She lives in Emerald Isle, NC with her pug, Bean, and enjoys spending time outdoors exploring the coast she is dedicated to protecting. Sam has built her career on the belief that science, education, and community action must come together to create lasting change for our ocean.
