Thankful for You!

‘Tis the season to be thankful, and we couldn’t be more grateful for all of our volunteers who have come out to lend a helping hand this year. Most recently, we worked alongside a group of volunteers for a marine debris clean-up on the Wanchese Highway. They worked hard to pull more than 250 pounds of trash and debris from the highway, keeping it from reaching our precious waterways and estuaries!

In our central region, a large group of volunteers joined us for a marine debris clean-up at Fort Macon State Park. The group worked hard out in the marsh to find and remove more than 800 pounds of litter.

Down at Carolina Beach State Park, the Federation worked alongside dozens of volunteers to plant about 5,000 plugs of wetland grasses to help complete a three-year restoration effort at the Park. Their efforts have helped transform the area.

This is just a small snapshot of the volunteers and community members who have come out to support the Federation’s efforts to protect and restore our beautiful coast this year, and we can’t wait to see more of you at our next events. Be sure to subscribe to our events calendar to get notified of volunteer opportunities.

Improvements Reported at Sugarloaf Island

It’s been just about a year since major restoration efforts were completed at Sugarloaf Island in Morehead City. The small barrier island has been eroding at a rapid rate for years, and with the threat of losing the protection of the barrier island, Morehead City, the Coastal Federation, aquatic restoration firm Sea & Shoreline, Sandbar Oyster Company, and WithersRavenel worked together to design and construct a multi-faceted restoration project on the island.

Less than a year later, project leaders say they are already seeing a positive impact on stabilizing the island, with sand accumulation, oyster recruitment, and, to the delight of fishermen, more fish, shrimp, and crabs reported around the stabilization structures. Check out our YouTube video below to learn more about the project and the progress being made.

Support Outstanding Reporting on Coastal Issues

Coastal Review won multiple awards from the North Carolina Press Association again this year for outstanding coverage of coastal issues.

Can we also earn your support?

We are committed to delivering award-winning coverage of the coast, but we need your help! If you can give, and you value quality reporting, please consider making a one-time gift this Giving Tuesday to support Coastal Review.

Giving Tuesday is Dec. 2, so there is still time to show your support!
