SUMMARY:Town of Manteo Fall Litter Pick up
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Coastal Federation will join forces with the Town of Manteo for a volunteer event to pick up trash and debris along the Manteo waterfront. \n\n\n\nVolunteers are invited to gather at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum at 8:45 am to pick up supplies and get instructions. Then volunteers will disperse in groups and spend a couple of hours scouring the town for litter. Help us make Manteo shine\, reduce coastal marine debris and have fun with your neighbors\, all while keeping Roanoke Island beautiful. \n\n\n\nAll of the necessary cleanup materials will be provided. Come in your work clothes\, be sure to wear sturdy\, closed toe shoes. This event is held in honor of Rodney “Crow” Murray\, a longtime employee of the Town of Manteo. \n\n\n\nJoin us as we partner with the Town of Manteo for the annual Fall Litter Cleanup to keep Shallowbag Bay clean\, safe and beautiful.

SUMMARY:Bradley Creek Elementary School Rain Garden Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Help the North Carolina Coastal Federation staff and volunteers maintain the rain garden at Bradley Creek Elementary School in Wilmington. This project is part of the Bradley and Hewletts Creeks Watershed Restoration Plan\, aimed at reducing polluted runoff that flows into the creeks. Rain gardens and wetlands play a crucial role in filtering runoff\, protecting water quality\, preventing swim advisories and shellfish closures\, reducing flood risks\, and providing wildlife habitats. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will remove invasive plants\, pull weeds\, prune trees\, and spread mulch in the existing rain gardens. All tools\, supplies\, snacks\, and refreshments will be provided. This event is open to the public and suitable for all ages. Whether you want to get your hands dirty or simply learn how to protect your local creeks\, join us for a fun\, educational day! SUMMARY:Coastal Cleanup Crusade: Roanoke Island
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coastal Federation on Monday\, Jan. 19\, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a debris cleanup of the Federation’s adopted roadsides and adjacent areas. Looking for some highway heroes to help pave the way for a debris-free start to the year!Participants will meet at a central location to check in with staff and pick up supplies at the Vista Creek Event Venue along the Federation’s Adopted Highway\, NC 345. We will then work in small groups and divide up to cover different areas. \n\n\n\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather as this entire event will take place outdoors\, bring water and a snack if needed. Sturdy shoes for walking in wet\, uneven areas are also recommended\, especially boots. Trash bags\, gloves\, and other cleanup materials will be provided. \n\n\n\nThis project is part of the Federation’s overall effort to ensure the North Carolina coast is free of marine debris. Establishing an annual paid program for marine debris removal – including crab pots – is a key objective of the N.C. Marine Debris Action Plan\, which will be underway in this same timeframe.The Federation will be working on other preventative strategies in the coming year\, including building stronger\, safer\, and more sustainable waterfront structures. DESCRIPTION:Weather update:  Due to the cold temperatures and high winds\, we have decided to move the location for the Hatteras Island Oyster Roast\, just about a mile away at the Hatteras Civic Center. The oysters will still be cooked and served outside\, so please dress for the weather. With the adjusted location\, there will be indoor accommodations to take breaks from the cold! Everything will take place as usual: NC Oysters\, clam chowder\, corn bread\, beverages\, live music\, and the silent auction. Looking forward to seeing you there!  \n\n\n\nAddress: 56658 on Hwy 12 on the northside Hatteras Village \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin the North Carolina Coastal Federation for a laid-back oyster roast at Oden’s Dock in Hatteras Village on Saturday\, February 7\, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. An oyster roast for the coast! \n\n\n\nThe event will feature fresh oysters\, clam chowder\, corn bread\, and other refreshments. Be sure to save room for homemade desserts from the bake sale. You can also enjoy live music and a silent auction with many unique\, regional items. The live auction is open\, and new items may be added weekly! \n\n\n\nTickets are $55 and on sale now. Ticket price includes all you can eat steamed oysters\, one serving of clam chowder\, corn bread and a nonalcoholic beverage. Alcoholic beverages will be available for additional purchase on site\, thanks to support from Carolina Brewery. \n\n\n\nAdvanced ticket purchase is highly recommended\, as this event has previously sold out. At the door ticket sales may be limited or not available. DESCRIPTION:Join us in Nags Head for the 2025-2026 season of OBX Green Drinks\, a popular monthly speaker series that brings together our Outer Banks community for an evening of networking\, presentations on local environmental topics\, and enjoying good food and drink. OBX Green Drinks is held monthly from October through March at Waverider’s in Nags Head. The OBX Green Drinks Series is free\, with food and drinks available for purchase. \n\n\n\nTo kick this new season\, we will be shellebrating N.C. Oyster Month on Thursday\, October 9\, alongside special guest Dr. Tal Ben-Horin\, Assistant Professor of shellfish pathology at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nDr. Ben-Horin’s research focuses on oyster genetics to identify traits that make certain oysters more resilient and better able to survive.  The popular delicacies have become a $27 million aquaculture industry in North Carolina\, but have been plagued by mass die-offs. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with ThriveOBX\, an initiative of Outer Banks Health and the Dare County Health Department\, we are excited to share information about the Big Beach & Island Cleanup happening on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026. The goal is to have as many beach accesses cleaned as possible between Duck and Hatteras as well as to have volunteers cleanup in Manteo at the Washington Baum Bridge and the Marine Industrial Park in Wanchese on this one specific day.  \n\n\n\nThe Coastal Federation will be leading the efforts on Roanoke Island\, with two meeting locations available in Manteo or Wanchese. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shoreline cleanup in partnership with Fort Macon State Park and the Surfrider Foundation – Bogue Banks Chapter! One of the Coastal Federation’s primary initiatives is to reduce the amount of marine debris littering coastal marshes\, beaches and waterways.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers will meet at the Fort Macon State Park Visitors Center parking lot by 9 a.m. on February 26. Please meet by the parked white Ranger pickup truck\, which will guide everyone to the soundside as a group. Please wear weather appropriate clothing that may get wet and dirty. She is a natural resource manager who coordinates stewardship activities across the ten sites of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve. She also manages the herd of wild horses that live on the Rachel Carson Reserve. \n\n\n\nBefore joining the N.C. Coastal Reserve program 14 years ago\, Paula worked as a biological consultant for various universities and non-profits and she also managed the Ecology and Conservation Laboratory at Duke University Marine Lab for several years prior to that. Paula earned degrees in Environmental Science and Biology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Master’s degree in Animals and Public Policy from Tufts Veterinary School near Boston. \n\n\n\nLocation:

SUMMARY:Marine Debris Clean Up at Morris Landing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve for a hands-on marine debris cleanup to protect our coastal waters! This event will coincide with the Southeast district’s Lost Fishing Gear Recovery Program\, offering a great opportunity to not only remove debris from the shoreline but also learn about efforts to recover lost crab pots and other fishing gear that can harm wildlife\, damage habitat\, and create hazards for boaters. \n\n\n\nEach year\, the North Carolina Coastal Federation partners with N.C. Marine Patrol and commercial watermen and women to remove lost fishing gear from coastal waters during the annual blue crab harvest closure. In early 2025\, crews collected 2\,136 crab pots across the northeast\, central\, and southeast coasts—helping keep our waterways safer and healthier. \n\n\n\nNo special skills are needed—just bring your enthusiasm! Please dress for the weather in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty\, wear closed-toe shoes\, and bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunglasses. SUMMARY:Living Shoreline Construction with Sandbar Oyster Co.
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Coastal Federation invites community members and volunteers to build 100-linear feet of living shoreline at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve. Volunteers will help install Sandbar Oyster Company’s OysterCatcher living shoreline system at low tide to join the mosaic of new structures at the site. This structure will protect the shoreline from erosion\, provide substrate for new oysters\, and enhance salt marsh habitat by gradually accruing sediment.  \n\n\n\nMorris Landing will be home to 3 new living shoreline structures in 2026. Native Shorelines installed 100-linear feet of their QuickReef product and Natrx installed an additional 100-linear feet of WaveSlope ExoForms. The Sandbar OysterCatcher system installed by volunteers completes the living shoreline phase of permitted projects at the site. The living shoreline mosaic at Morris Landing was made possible by the Federation’s living shoreline cost-share program that benefits the public trust waters of North Carolina.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers are needed to haul and place the living shoreline components and stack them to form the new structure. Participants can self-elect how much they want to lift and carry the components which are upwards of 30 lbs each. The event is suitable for adults and organized groups.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers should dress in layers for the weather and in clothes that are comfortable but can also get dirty. Volunteers should also wear closed-toe shoes or boots that fully cover their feet and can get wet (prepare to walk in ankle-to-knee deep water and mud.) SUMMARY:Earth Fair OBX: An Earth Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Earth Day with the Coastal Environmental Educators Network.  This free event will take place at the Jockey’s Ridge State Park visitor center parking area.  The event will bring together many Outer Banks organizations that offer environmental education\, so you’ll be sure to learn something new from the groups that are working hard to preserve the delicate ecosystems of the Outer Banks.  Share your love for the natural world and check out our fun and informative exhibits and activities for kids.  Walk around and explore the exhibitors\, state of the art Visitors Center and other features of the State Park! \n\n\n\nKitty Hawk Kites is teaming up with Dare Arts Council to create the Outer Banks ‘Sweep the Beach’ Trash Art Contest! In conjunction with Earth Day\, we ask artists to create work from the trash they have collected from our beaches. After submission\, artwork will be placed on our TrART Walk in varying locations across the Outer Banks.  Select pieces will be collected and moved to Jockey’s Ridge State Park and on display during Earth Fair OBX.  Selected pieces will be adjudicated and voted on for varying prize categories. Winners will be announced at the Kitty Hawk Kites booth during the event.   \n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of learning and fun as we celebrate Earth Day\, and ways we can all work together to protect the North Carolina coast.  \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\nClick here for more information\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

DESCRIPTION:Join local birding experts for an educational cruise on the White Oak River in Swansboro. The group will slowly cruise on a covered ferryboat through the estuaries in and around the White Oak River and Bogue Sound\, including Huggins and Bear Islands\, looking for resident and migratory birds. \n\n\n\nParticipants will meet at the Lady Swan Boat Tours dock in downtown Swansboro and are asked to bring their binoculars\, water\, and a snack\, and dress appropriately for the weather. The program fee is $35. All ages are welcome\, though the program is geared toward adults and older children. \n\n\n\nTo register\, click here\, and select “Book Now” then “Birding Cruise on the Lady Swan”. You’ll see a calendar to the right of the page with different dates (highlighted in green) to choose from. You can also call Lady Swan Tours at (910) 325-1200 for help with registration.
