SUMMARY:Green Drinks OBX
DESCRIPTION:The Oyster Wars: How a Humble Shellfish Became a Source of Wealth\, Power\, and Bloodshed \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGreen Drinks is a casual monthly gathering for people who care about our coast. Whether you enjoy boating\, beach days\, or simply want to keep our waters clean and our communities strong\, this is a relaxed space to connect with others\, hear from local voices\, and stay up to date on important coastal topics. Each month\, we’ll highlight a different issue like salt marsh restoration\, oysters\, or local happenings that impact the coast\, and talk about how we can work together to protect the places we all enjoy. Grab a drink from the bar and join the conversation! \n\n\n\nThese events are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nOctober’s Speaker \n\n\n\nShea LaFountaine | Creator of the History Fix Podcast \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOysters have been part of the Outer Banks story for centuries as a food source\, an economic powerhouse\, and\, surprisingly\, a source of conflict. At this month’s Green Drinks\, Shea LaFountaine will explore that history through her talk\, The Oyster Wars: How a Humble Shellfish Became a Source of Wealth\, Power\, and Bloodshed. \n\n\n\nShea will take us from the Roanoke colonies of the 1580s\, where oysters played a bigger role than many people realize\, to the “Oyster Wars” of the late 1800s\, when northern dredgers threatened local oyster beds and Outer Banks residents fought back. Along the way\, she’ll explore the surprising social history of a humble mollusk and the ways oysters shaped the people\, communities\, and conflicts of our coast. \n\n\n\nCome learn how oysters became a source of wealth\, power\, and bloodshed through these stories that reveal a timeless connection between coastal communities\, natural resources\, and the fight to protect them. \n\n\n\nLocation:

SUMMARY:Alderman Elementary School Rain Garden Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Help the North Carolina Coastal Federation staff and volunteers maintain the rain garden at Alderman Elementary School in Wilmington. This project is part of the Bradley and Hewletts Creeks Watershed Restoration Plan\, aimed at reducing polluted runoff that flows into the creeks. Rain gardens and wetlands play a crucial role in filtering runoff\, protecting water quality\, preventing swim advisories and shellfish closures\, reducing flood risks\, and providing wildlife habitats. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will remove invasive plants\, pull weeds\, prune trees\, and spread mulch in the existing rain garden. All tools\, supplies\, snacks\, and refreshments will be provided. This event is open to the public and suitable for all ages. Whether you want to get your hands dirty or simply learn how to protect your local creeks\, join us for a fun\, educational day! The rain garden also serves as a living classroom for students to learn about water quality and stormwater pollution solutions. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

Her dissertation research\, broadly\, asserts that the influence/ “footprint” of estuarine habitats extends beyond their physical borders\, meaning habitat loss (and restoration) can have much greater spatial impacts on neighboring habitats and organisms than initially predicted. Through her work\, Longmire quantifies broad-scale impacts of natural and restored intertidal habitats (i.e.\, oyster reefs and living shorelines) on the spatial distributions of marine invertebrates\, fishes\, and vegetation in intertidal landscapes. In this talk\, Longmire will focus on one of her projects (funded by the NC Coastal Federation) looking at how large-scale (>300 meters long) living shoreline installations affect connectivity between landward\, intertidal habitats and seaward\, subtidal habitats via alterations to predatory fish movement and diversity. She pairs acoustic predator tracking with night-time surveys at multiple NC living shorelines to determine if these structures inhibit predators\, like southern flounder\, red drum\, and sting rays\, from accessing landward foraging and spawning habitats\, and\, if so\, how current construction guidelines can be updated to better balance engineering and ecological needs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTiffany Paalman is a PhD student in the Silliman Lab at the Duke University Marine Lab. She is a field ecologist\, focused on intertidal ecosystem resilience in coastal North Carolina. Her research asks: How do ecological conditions shape the occurrence\, intensity\, and consequences of consumer-mediated disturbance for coastal ecosystem dynamics? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMadison Lytle is a Research Specialist with the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve (NCNERR)\, where she studies how North Carolina’s coastal and estuarine ecosystems change over time. Her work focuses on resilience research and long-term monitoring\, including collecting and analyzing data on water quality\, vegetation\, marshes\, and coastal habitats. In this presentation\, Madison will share examples of how long‑term monitoring\, habitat mapping\, and resilience research at the Reserve help us better understand and protect coastal ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLily Hare is pursuing a degree in Earth and Marine Science (B.S.) with a concentration in Marine Biology and Ecology at UNC Chapel Hill. She will discuss how prolonged exposure to low-salinity environments can impact bottlenose dolphins\, with a focus on a group inhabiting a quarry in Craven County\, North Carolina. Because low-salinity environments have been associated with freshwater skin disease in some dolphin populations\, the dolphins’ continued presence in the quarry since May raises questions about the potential health effects of prolonged exposure to these conditions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

SUMMARY:Shoreline Cleanup at Fort Macon State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shoreline cleanup! One of the Coastal Federation’s primary initiatives is to reduce the amount of marine debris littering coastal marshes\, beaches and waterways. Together with Fort Macon State Park\, we invite volunteers to help clean up litter along the soundside.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers will meet at the Fort Macon State Park Bathhouse parking lot by 10 a.m. on Thursday\, November 5. Please meet by the parked white Ranger pickup truck\, which will guide everyone out to the salt marsh as a group. \n\n\n\nPlease wear weather appropriate clothing that may get wet and dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required\, and boots are recommended\, as this marsh site is very muddy. Trash collection supplies\, gloves\, water\, sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.  \n\n\n\nThis event is weather dependent.
