Each month\, we’ll highlight a different issue—like salt marsh restoration\, oysters\, or local happenings that impact the coast—and talk about how we can work together to protect the places we all enjoy. Grab a drink from the bar and join the conversation—these events are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho: Anyone who loves our coast! \n\n\n\nWhat: A relaxed\, come-as-you-are meetup featuring a new coastal topic each month \n\n\n\nWhere: Rooftop Bar at Jack’s on the Waterfront – 513 Evans St\, Morehead City\, NC 28557 \n\n\n\nWhen: One Thursday a month from 5:30–7:30 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJuly’s Speaker | Dr. Joel Fodrie \n\n\n\nProfessor\, Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Chair in Public Policy\, Department of Earth\, Marine and Environmental Sciences \n\n\n\nDirector\, Duke University Marine Lab \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Joel Fodrie is an ecologist whose research focuses on the population dynamics of fishes and shellfishes\, estuarine ecology\, and the health of coastal ecosystems. He earned his PhD from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and his BA in Biology and History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \n\n\n\nHis research examines marine population connectivity\, the impacts of environmental change on coastal habitats\, seagrass ecology\, shellfish mariculture\, and fisheries management. Since 2010\, he has led the Institute of Marine Sciences’ long-term shark survey\, contributing more than 115 peer-reviewed publications and playing an active role in coastal resource management across North Carolina. These articles appear in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, Ecology\, and BioScience. Over the last decade\, he has become increasingly engaged in coastal resource management in North Carolina. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Dr. Fodrie will provide an overview of his research\, with a special focus on sharks and their vital role in maintaining healthy coastal ecosystems and the marine communities he studies. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how shark populations influence the balance and resilience of North Carolina’s coastal waters. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

With a background in ecology\, pollinator biology\, and canine scent detection\, Jacqueline has developed innovative methods for training dogs to locate bumblebee nests in the wild—an important but often challenging task for researchers studying native bee populations. Her work has taken her across the United States\, collaborating with researchers to better understand native bumblebee populations and the habitats they depend on \n\n\n\nJacqueline will speak about the growing role of conservation detection dogs in wildlife research and how these remarkable canine partners are helping advance pollinator conservation. She’ll share stories from the field\, insights into training detection dogs\, and examples of how their work is supporting scientists and conservation efforts nationwide. \n\n\n\nAttendees will gain a deeper understanding of pollinator conservation\, the fascinating science behind scent-detection dogs\, and the critical role native bumblebees play in healthy ecosystems. They’ll also learn how innovative partnerships between people\, dogs\, and science are helping make conservation research more effective\, accessible\, and engaging for communities across the country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Coastal Carbon Connections: How Habitats Store Carbon
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to join us for our Southeast Coastal Ambassadors meeting to learn about blue carbon and the important role coastal habitats play in storing carbon. Southeast Coastal Ambassador Warren Darrell will share an introduction to blue carbon\, including how coastal ecosystems like salt marshes\, seagrasses\, and oyster reefs capture and store carbon while supporting cleaner water\, wildlife habitat\, and more resilient shorelines.  \n\n\n\nAfter Warren’s presentation\, Federation staff will share updates on coastwide restoration projects supported by the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant and how this work helps coastal habitats store carbon\, improve water quality\, support wildlife\, and protect our coast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve your spot here!\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

SUMMARY:Nursery Marsh Planting at North River Wetlands Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us in planting the Nursery Marsh out at North River Wetlands Preserve! This one-acre marsh will serve as a “Mother Marsh” for future restoration projects along the coast.  \n\n\n\nAs the marsh matures\, the Federation will harvest plants sustainably to safeguard and perpetuate the health of the created marsh. This will help supply plants for additional marsh restoration projects. The marsh is a first-of-its-kind plant nursery in North Carolina that commercial nurseries can hopefully replicate in the future. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will meet at the North River Wetlands Preserve gate by 9:30 a.m. and should wear weather-appropriate clothes that can get wet and dirty. Closed-toe shoes that cover the foot are required. Volunteers should also bring a water bottle\, hat\, sunglasses and any medications they may need. Snacks\, water\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, gloves and planting tools will be provided.  \n\n\n\nThis event is limited to 30 people and registration is required. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation:

SUMMARY:Earth Fair OBX: An Earth Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Earth Day with the Coastal Environmental Educators Network.  This free event will take place at the Jockey’s Ridge State Park visitor center parking area.  The event will bring together many Outer Banks organizations that offer environmental education\, so you’ll be sure to learn something new from the groups that are working hard to preserve the delicate ecosystems of the Outer Banks.  Share your love for the natural world and check out our fun and informative exhibits and activities for kids.  Walk around and explore the exhibitors\, state of the art Visitors Center and other features of the State Park! \n\n\n\nKitty Hawk Kites is teaming up with Dare Arts Council to create the Outer Banks ‘Sweep the Beach’ Trash Art Contest! In conjunction with Earth Day\, we ask artists to create work from the trash they have collected from our beaches. After submission\, artwork will be placed on our TrART Walk in varying locations across the Outer Banks.  Select pieces will be collected and moved to Jockey’s Ridge State Park and on display during Earth Fair OBX.  Selected pieces will be adjudicated and voted on for varying prize categories. Winners will be announced at the Kitty Hawk Kites booth during the event.   \n\n\n\nJoin us for an afternoon of learning and fun as we celebrate Earth Day\, and ways we can all work together to protect the North Carolina coast.  \n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\nClick here for more information\n\n\n\n\nLocation:
