This includes the Shellfish Sanitation Program with the goal to ensure safe shellfish harvest and consumption\, which also supports the shellfish industry’s growth. Their agency also implements the Recreational Water Quality Program that monitors coastal waters and advises the public when standards for safe water contact are exceeded. \n\n\n\nShannon has been with the Section for over 20 years\, spending the last 10 as the Section Chief. He began his career as an Environmental Health Specialist with the Carteret County Health Department. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Shannon will give an overview of the important work his team does to protect public health and secure the coastal tourism and seafood economies. DESCRIPTION:The NC Marine Debris Action Plan workshops will provide local governments in the 20 coastal counties with resources for implementing an inspection program for residential dock and piers\, and for developing and implementing a program/ordinance for abandoned and derelict vessels (ADVs). \n\n\n\nHosted by the N.C  Coastal Federation and the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve\, the workshops will be offered in two coastal locations\, on two separate dates for local governments\, agency partners\, marine contractors\, engineers\, community leaders and other interested individuals. \n\n\n\nThe workshops will provide participants opportunities to learn about and discuss:  \n\n\n\n– Incorporating Resilient Residential Docks and Piers into local building codes \n\n\n\n-Addressing ADVs through ordinances\, the state program and accessing support \n\n\n\n-Engagement opportunities through the N.C. Marine Debris Action Plan: 2026-30 \n\n\n\n-Resources\, guides and “Tool-Kits” for adopting and implementing their own programs \n\n\n\nContinuing education credits available: \n\n\n\n-American Institute of Certified Planners\, 4 Certification Maintenance credits: Wilmington\, ID 9332178; Washington\, ID 9332180 \n\n\n\n-Certificate of Participation\, 4 hours\, provided to self-file for other professional credits such as engineer PDHs \n\n\n\nPanel discussions will feature local and regional stakeholders sharing real-world experiences\, implementation challenges\, lessons learned\, and opportunities for continued collaboration. \n\n\n\nLunch will be provided\, along with coffee and light refreshments in the morning. DESCRIPTION:Join the North Carolina Coastal Federation for the Taste of the Coast Celebration\, a fabulous summer evening celebrating North Carolina’s beautiful and bountiful coast!  \n\n\n\nThis casual celebration will take place on Saturday\, September 12\, on the banks of Bogue Sound at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City.  \n\n\n\nThe festivities will include food and wine pairings\, fresh N.C. oysters (raw and steamed)\, live music\, a beautiful view of the sunset over the water\, and a wonderful group of coastal supporters!  \n\n\n\nBack again this year is the outstanding silent auction featuring the best of the coast\, from weekend trips\, boat tours\, artwork and more\, as well as live music\, local seafood\, and great company. Our auction will open on August 15\, with new items added every week! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: \n\n\n\nTicket sales for the Taste of the Coast Celebration open. SUMMARY:Shoreline Cleanup at Hoop Pole Creek
DESCRIPTION:Help us protect coastal wildlife and habitats at Hope Pole Creek Nature Trail.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers will help to remove trash and debris items. This entire event will take place outdoors\, so please dress accordingly. Closed-toed shoes are required\, and sturdy shoes for walking in wet areas are also recommended. Boots are appropriate if you choose to walk along the water’s edge. Trash bags\, gloves and other cleanup materials will be provided. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis project is part of the Federation’s overall effort to ensure the North Carolina coast is free of marine debris. SUMMARY:Shoreline Cleanup at Fort Macon State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shoreline cleanup! One of the Coastal Federation’s primary initiatives is to reduce the amount of marine debris littering coastal marshes\, beaches and waterways. Together with Fort Macon State Park\, we invite volunteers to help clean up litter along the soundside.  \n\n\n\nVolunteers will meet at the Fort Macon State Park Bathhouse parking lot by 10 a.m. on Thursday\, November 5. Please meet by the parked white Ranger pickup truck\, which will guide everyone out to the salt marsh as a group. \n\n\n\nPlease wear weather appropriate clothing that may get wet and dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required\, and boots are recommended\, as this marsh site is very muddy. Trash collection supplies\, gloves\, water\, sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.  \n\n\n\nThis event is weather dependent.
