SUMMARY:Alderman Elementary School Rain Garden Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Help the North Carolina Coastal Federation staff and volunteers maintain the rain garden at Alderman Elementary School in Wilmington. This project is part of the Bradley and Hewletts Creeks Watershed Restoration Plan\, aimed at reducing polluted runoff that flows into the creeks. Rain gardens and wetlands play a crucial role in filtering runoff\, protecting water quality\, preventing swim advisories and shellfish closures\, reducing flood risks\, and providing wildlife habitats. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will remove invasive plants\, pull weeds\, prune trees\, and spread mulch in the existing rain garden. All tools\, supplies\, snacks\, and refreshments will be provided. This event is open to the public and suitable for all ages. Whether you want to get your hands dirty or simply learn how to protect your local creeks\, join us for a fun\, educational day! The rain garden also serves as a living classroom for students to learn about water quality and stormwater pollution solutions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!

Grab a drink from the bar and join the conversation—these events are free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nWho: Anyone who loves our coast! \n\n\n\nWhat: A relaxed\, come-as-you-are meetup featuring a new coastal topic each month \n\n\n\nWhere: Rooftop Bar at Jack’s on the Waterfront – 513 Evans St\, Morehead City\, NC 28557 \n\n\n\nWhen: One Thursday a month from 5:30–7:00 PMAugust 21\, September 11\, October 9 \n\n\n\nAbout October’s Speaker\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Sam Athey\n\n\n\nVice Chair\, Surfrider Bogue Banks\n\n\n\nSam has worked in the marine debris field for the last decade as a researcher\, educator\, and advocate for sustainable solutions to plastic pollution. Her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington focused on the sources and fate of microplastics and the chemical contaminants they carry in marine and freshwater environments. She went on to earn her doctorate at the University of Toronto\, where her research expanded on the connections between plastic pollution and chemical exposure in aquatic systems. \n\n\n\nSam has taught as a lecturer in UNCW’s Department of Environmental Sciences and served as the lead marine debris instructor for UNCW’s MarineQuest program\, where she inspired young people to see science in action. She now serves as Marine Plastics Program Manager at EarthEcho International\, where she works to empower the next generation of ocean advocates and equip them with the knowledge and tools to address plastic pollution in their own communities from the local to international level. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOutside of her professional work\, Sam volunteers as Vice Chair of the Surfrider Foundation Bogue Banks chapter\, helping to advance community-driven campaigns for clean water and healthy beaches. SUMMARY:2025-2026 OBX Green Drinks
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Nags Head for the 2025-2026 season of OBX Green Drinks\, a popular monthly speaker series that brings together our Outer Banks community for an evening of networking\, presentations on local environmental topics\, and enjoying good food and drink. OBX Green Drinks is held monthly from October through March at Waverider’s in Nags Head. The OBX Green Drinks Series is free\, with food and drinks available for purchase. \n\n\n\nTo kick this new season\, we will be shellebrating N.C. Oyster Month on Thursday\, October 9\, alongside special guest Dr. Tal Ben-Horin\, Assistant Professor of shellfish pathology at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Refreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nDr. Ben-Horin’s research focuses on oyster genetics to identify traits that make certain oysters more resilient and better able to survive.  The popular delicacies have become a $27 million aquaculture industry in North Carolina\, but have been plagued by mass die-offs. Ben-Horin\, whose home base is the NC State Center for Marine Sciences and Technology on the NC coast in Morehead City\, has been studying the survivors.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMark your calendar for the full 2025-2026 OBX Green Drinks Series: \n\n\n\n\nOctober 9 \n\n\n\nNovember 13\n\n\n\nDecember 10\n\n\n\nFebruary 12\n\n\n\nMarch 12\n\n\n\n\nCheck back soon for information on the confirmed speakers and topics for each date!

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Wetland Planting at Carolina Beach State Park
DESCRIPTION:Due to the weather and flooding out at Carolina Beach State Park\, the wetland planting has been postponed until Thursday\, October 16\, from 10:00 am -12:00 pm. \n\n\n\nJoin the North Carolina Coastal Federation for the final planting in our three-year wetland restoration project at Carolina Beach State Park! This is a wonderful opportunity for returning volunteers to see how the wetland has transformed over the past three years—and for new participants to get involved before the project wraps up. Volunteers will help plant native wetland species as we complete this multi-year restoration effort. \n\n\n\nWetlands serve as natural buffers against storms\, filter pollutants\, provide essential wildlife habitat\, and support resilient coastal communities. This area\, once overrun with invasive phragmites\, is being restored with native plants that benefit birds\, mammals\, and aquatic life. Your efforts will leave a lasting impact on the ecosystem and help prepare the site for a new observation platform that will provide future educational opportunities. \n\n\n\nThis event is family-friendly and open to all ages\, but please note that the work is physically demanding and will take place in muddy\, wet\, and potentially hot and humid conditions. No prior experience is necessary—basic training will be provided. All tools\, supplies\, snacks\, and refreshments will be available on-site\, along with restroom facilities and parking. \n\n\n\nThis project is part of the Restoration Plan for the Natural Resources Damages Assessment for the Kerr-McGee EPA Superfund Site in Navassa. We are grateful for the support of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, NOAA\, and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality\, along with our valued partners at the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation and the dedicated staff at Carolina Beach State Park. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here!\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by Alan Cradick\n\n\n\n Photo by Alan Cradick\n\n\n\n Photo by Alan Cradick

SUMMARY:Marine Debris Clean Up at Morris Landing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve for a hands-on marine debris cleanup to protect our coastal waters! This event will coincide with the Southeast district’s Lost Fishing Gear Recovery Program\, offering a great opportunity to not only remove debris from the shoreline but also learn about efforts to recover lost crab pots and other fishing gear that can harm wildlife\, damage habitat\, and create hazards for boaters. \n\n\n\nEach year\, the North Carolina Coastal Federation partners with N.C. Marine Patrol and commercial watermen and women to remove lost fishing gear from coastal waters during the annual blue crab harvest closure. In early 2025\, crews collected 2\,136 crab pots across the northeast\, central\, and southeast coasts—helping keep our waterways safer and healthier. \n\n\n\nNo special skills are needed—just bring your enthusiasm! Please dress for the weather in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty\, wear closed-toe shoes\, and bring a reusable water bottle\, hat\, and sunglasses. We’ll provide gloves\, boots\, trash pickers\, and trash bags\, along with basic instruction at the start. \n\n\n\nParking\, restrooms\, and refreshments will be available on-site.Support for this cleanup is provided by the NC Commercial Fishing License Resource Fund and NOAA Marine Debris. \n\n\n\n\nRegister to Join!\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto by: Julian Coley\n\n\n\nPhoto by: Julian Coley\n\n\n\nPhoto by: Julian Coley
