Native Plant Week Celebration
October 17, 2020 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Did you know that fall can be a great time for planting? The Coastal Federation is celebrating Native Plant Week this fall, by offering Pollinator Garden Starter Kits for a suggested $20 donation. Native plants help soak up rain water and protect coastal water quality and this time of year is very suitable for putting some plants in the ground. All proceeds will support the federation’s clean water education and Coastal Stewardship Award programs.
Come by the Secotan Farmer’s Market in Wanchese, Saturday, Oct. 17, between 9 am and 12 pm to pick up a Pollinator Garden Starter Kit, and learn more about the benefits of native plants. The Pollinator Garden Starter Kits were grown from seed and will include six spring blooming perennials, one-gallon size, and a native wildflower seed packet. The species of perennials will likely include: Beardtongue, Bluestar, Beach Blanket Flower, Licorice Plant, Bradbury’s Pink Monarda, False Indigo, Butterfly Milkweed.
All of the plants can grow in full to part sun and will do fine in most types of garden soil. Rachel Veal, Horticulturist at the N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island, will be on hand to answer questions and talk about the benefits of native plantings.
What are you waiting for – let’s get growing! Supplies are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. To reserve a Pollinator Garden Starter Kit in advance, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Plants must be picked up in person during the Farmer’s Market event.
If you can’t make it to the Farmer’s Market you can still support these efforts by making a donation to support clean water education and the Coastal Stewardship Award Program.
