On Saturday, March 21, twelve volunteers came to the headquarters office to bag recycled oyster shells and cleanup up areas surrounding the office. The group consisted of students from Croatan High School who are a part of the Young Democrats of America Club, as well as members from the Carteret County Democratic Women’s Group.
The volunteers bagged the recycled oyster shells so they can be placed back into local estuaries and be used to build oyster reefs. The reefs will help protect eroding shorelines while also providing habitat for news oysters. Oysters help clean the water by filtering 25-50 gallons of water a day, and a healthy oyster reef can provide habitat for 300 different species in the estuary. Learn more about oysters.
We are very thankful to these groups which dedicated a Saturday morning to protect our coastal waters and its oyster habitats.
