OCEAN Autumn is the ideal time for planting shrubs and trees, and the N.C. Coastal Federation is helping gardeners out by offering a fall Native Plant Sale.

Plants will be available starting Monday and running daily through Friday, Sept. 26. The sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the federation’s headquarters at 3609 N.C. 24 in Ocean, which is in Carteret County about 10 miles south of Morehead City.

Members of the federation will receive a 10 percent discount on all plants purchased. If you are not a member, memberships will be available to purchase at the sale.

Thirty-gallon rain barrels will also be for sale. They are equipped for easy installation. The cost is $50 for federation members and $60 for non-members.

People often ask, why plant in the fall? The cooler temperatures make it easier on the plants. Our soil normally stays warm enough throughout the winter allowing plants to continue root growth. Come spring those planted in the fall have an established root system that can sustain them through our hot, dry, harsh summer climate.

Proceeds from the Native Plant Sale will be used for the federation’s restoration and education programs.
