NC Coastal Federation
OYSTER MONITORING EVENTS
Volunteers and Divers Needed

Please join NCCF as it monitors created oyster reefs at three project sites:

Wednesday,September 26
9 AM - 5 PM at Alligator Bay near N. Topsail Island
Meet at boat ramp in N. Topsail

Saturday, October 6
9 AM – 1 PM at Dick’s Bay behind Masonboro Island
Meet at boat ramp at Snow’s Cut in Carolina Beach

Friday, October 12
9 AM – 5 PM at New River near Snead’s Ferry
Meet in Snead’s Ferry

  • Each day will begin with an introduction talk and then we will travel by boat to the project site for the monitoring activities. We will count and measure oysters and other organisms, look at reef formation and examine water quality. This data will be used to evaluate the establishment and formation of the created reefs and will be shared with resource agencies and researchers.
  • We will be in the boats at Alligator Bay and New River and on the mudflats and reefs at Dick’s Bay, so participants should be dressed to get wet and muddy. Closed toe shoes (old sneakers, boots) are mandatory. No tevas, sandals or flip flops will be allowed. Participants should dress warmly with layers, but with clothes that can get muddy and wet.
  • We recommend that participants bring a towel and a dry set of clothes and come prepared for rain. A hat and sunglasses will also help. Also bring any medication you will need, in case you stay longer than intended.
We're looking for 1-2 divers for the 9/26 Alligator Bay and 10/12 New River monitoring days. The reefs are in shallow water, ranging from ~ 2’– 6’ in depth. The divers will place and retrieve wire mesh cages that are anchored on the reef and to take some measurements of the reef. Divers must supply all of their own gear, including tanks.
  • NCCF will provide: all necessary monitoring equipment; gloves; snacks; lunch and extra drinks (but it is a good idea to bring your own water bottle); extra sunscreen; and insect repellent.
  • Due to the nature of this activity we are only able to accommodate participants above the age of 14.

Anyone interested in volunteering for any of these days may register by contacting Rachael Carlyle of the NC Coastal Federation at 252-393-8185 or at rachaelc@nccoast.org.
