Volunteer Invitation

    Marsh Planting Event
Thursday, June 15 at Carteret Community College
(in front of the CMAST building, 303 College Circle)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
from 8:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. and/or 1:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m

Carteret Community College (CCC) and the N.C. Coastal Federation are looking for volunteers to help plant 12,000 marsh plants along Bogue Sound and learn about wetland and oyster restoration on Thursday, June 15, 2006. The planting is part of a “Living Shoreline” project at CCC, which includes the stabilization of an eroding shoreline fronting the NCSU College of Marine Science and Technology (CMAST) building, the restoration of coastal marsh and oyster reef habitat along 1,500 feet of shoreline along Bogue Sound, and the construction of a stormwater wetland, to pre-treat polluted runoff before it enters the water.

The restored coastal marsh, oyster reef and stormwater wetland are designed to restore our native oyster population, provide habitat for finfish and shellfish, and filter stormwater before it enters our estuarine waters.  The project has been made possible through generous support from the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund Program, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Community-Based Restoration Program.

If you are interested in helping with this effort, please contact Rachael Carlyle at the NC Coastal Federation.  Planting will take place during two sessions from 8:30-11am or from 1pm-3:30 pm.  Come ready to plant and bring your friends – you are welcome to help for one or both of the sessions!  Please call to tell us you’re coming and receive more information. Hope to see you there!
