Marsh Planting Event: Tuesday, July 24
at Carteret Community College

Morehead City, NC – Carteret Community College (CCC) and the NC Coastal Federation invite volunteers to help plant 4,000 marsh plants along Bogue Sound and learn about wetland restoration on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. This event will take place on the CCC campus and is a supplementary planting of the lower marsh section of the shoreline behind the CMAST facility. This second planting of the 2007 summer season is part of a living shoreline project at CCC, the goals of which include shoreline stabilization, establishment of coastal marsh and oyster reef habitats, construction of a stormwater treatment wetland and educational opportunities.

The coastal marsh, oyster reef and stormwater wetland are designed to restore our native oyster population, provide habitat for finfish and shellfish, and filter stormwater before it enters our estuarine waters.  The project has been made possible through generous support from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Community-Based Restoration Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and others.

If you are interested in helping with this effort, please contact Rachael Carlyle at the NC Coastal Federation. Planting will take place during a morning session only from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Come ready to plant wearing close-toed shoes that may get wet, cool clothing and a hat, as there is little to no shade. This is an event for all ages. Please RSVP so we may give you more information. Hope to see you there!
