Roland-Grise Middle School, located at 4412 Lake Avenue in Wilmington, is a public school for sixth through eighth graders. For the past three years, teachers Penny Windsor, Gwen O’Quinn, and Sabrina Hill-Black successfully expanded and incorporated the Wetland Nursery Program into their daily curriculum. Penny and Gwen have retired, however, and this year a new teacher, Nancy Tatum, will take on the program. In the past, Roland-Grise students created an environmental magazine including seed germination conclusions, pictures of their restoration planting, and letters to North Carolina senators expressing concern for the coastal environment.
This is the fourth year Roland-Grise Middle School and their sixth graders have been involved in NCCF’s Wetland Nursery Program. They have helped to plant over 8,500 Spartina alterniflora plants.
