Cape Lookout Summer Program 2008

Erica

The N.C. Coastal Federation and the Carteret County Parks and Recreation Department will once again this summer offer guided explorations of the natural beauty of Cape Lookout National Seashore. Two types of excursions will be available.

  • Barrier Island Ecology

Join federation guides for an educational walk from the sound to the ocean. You'll search for animals and plants to identify and learn about animal and plant adaptations for life on a barrier island, the constant migration of these barrier islands, and environmental issues the Cape Lookout National Seashore faces today.

  • Explore the Tidal Flats

Join federation guides on an exploration of tidal flats and search for wanderers, burrowers and hunters that call these sandy areas home. Discover the survival techniques of whelks, worms, wentletraps and other marine creatures.

These programs are free if you provide your own transportation to the island. Just show up at the Cape Lookout Lighthouse about 10 minutes before the scheduled time. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, comfortable and sun appropriate clothing and sunscreen.

You can pre-register with the Carteret County Park and Recreation Department and take Calico Jack’s Ferry from Harkers Island. The cost is $5 for the ferry. To register, call the Recreation department at 252-808-4067 or use its online registration form. Please register at least two weeks in advance of the excursion you'd like to take.
