The Coastal Federation encourages individuals to learn more about the coast and the challenges we face. You’ll find lots of fun and fascinating learning opportunities throughout the year. Our goal is to motivate individuals to take a more active role in coastal conservation. Here are a few things you can do to become better informed.

(L-R): The Daland Nature Library has articles, videos, and books for all ages;
The State of the Coast reports annually on NC coastal issues; Indoor and outdoor
educational workshops are offered year-round on a variety of subjects.

NCCF offers the following educational opportunities:

  • NCCF Publications: The first annual State of the Coast Report was published in 1995 and distributed to 100,000 households. The Report provides current information on coastal issues, challenges and solutions and evaluates our elected officials work on issues throughout the year. The 2006 edition will begin a new tradition of the release of the State of the Coast Report in April. Other publications, including Coastal Review and Restoration Project Fact Sheets, focus more specifically on current NCCF projects. These publications are available at our office and Coastal Review is sent quarterly to all members and donors.
  • Daland Nature Library: The nature library is a wonderful resource for all ages and is open throughout the week at our headquarters in Ocean. There are over 800 books, magazines, and articles ranging from NC field guides to coastal issues to environmental conservation.
  • Workshops & Events: Check out our calendar of activities, meetings, events and festivals. We offer various workshops throughout the year on a number of different environmental topics. NCCF recognizes the fact that workshops are important in continuing education for professionals. Please check this link often for updates.
  • Cape Lookout Summer Program: NCCF and the Carteret County Parks and Recreation Department each summer offer guided explorations of the natural beauty of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
  • Tune in to NCCF's Cable Show: An easy way to keep up-to-date on coastal issues and happenings is with our monthly cable show, "Coastal Review." Watch NCCF's "Coastal Review" every Wednesday at 9 pm on Time-Warner's public access channel 10 (Morehead City). We discuss news, events, local and state-wide environmental issues, and talk with guests from around North Carolina. "Coastal Review" also shows at specially scheduled times throughout the state of North Carolina.
  • Hike One of Our Nature Trails: Visit NCCF's two nature trails in Carteret County which are open to the public every day during daylight hours. The Patsy Pond Nature Trail in the Croatan National Forest is located directly across from NCCF headquarters in Ocean and features a longleaf pine forest with spectacular shallow ponds. Visit a globally endangered maritime forest and NCCF's oyster sanctuary while hiking the Hoop Pole Creek Nature Trail located in Atlantic Beach off Hwy 58 next to Atlantic Station Shopping Center.
  • Gift Shop: Show your support and dedication to a healthy coastal environment by wearing and displaying North Carolina Coastal Federation apparel. There are a variety of styles and colors of hats, shirts, and accessories to choose from and all the proceeds go toward protecting the North Carolina Coast. We also feature an extensive collection of coastal related books for adults and children ... Birding in North Carolina, Cook Books, Ecology, Gardening, North Carolina Coast, North Carolina Folklore, Sealife, Seashells, Weather, and more.
  • Visit Us: The NCCF Headquarters is open to the public Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and located at 3609 Highway 24 in Ocean, about halfway between Morehead City and Swansboro. In addition to main offices, the headquarters houses a gift shop, nature library, a world-class seashell exhibit, exhibits and information area. Learn about stormwater and how it impacts the coastal environment. Stop by the office and ask for a demonstration of our stormwater models. Here you can also pick up local canoe trail maps, guides to water quality management, general information or a free copy of the Coastal Federation’s latest State of the Coast Report. You can also enjoy NCCF’s world-class shell exhibit. Donated by Dean and Dorothy Weber of Wilmington the total collection includes 15,000 shells of 5,000 varieties. Currently about 1,000 shells from the eastern seaboard are on display in the headquarters building.
