Learn Today . . . Stewards Tomorrow

Dixon High School, located at 160 Dixon School Road near Jacksonville, is a public high school open to 9th – 12th grade students. Dr. Myron Beatty became personally involved with the Coastal Federation through restoration activities and he decided to involve his students, as well. Dixon students volunteer their time after school hours to help with shoreline and oyster reef monitoring activities as they are unable to take time off during the day. Dixon High School was involved in NCCF’s restroration and monitoring programs for the first time in 2004.

Students helped monitor one of NCCF’s oyster reef sites, as well as a living shoreline site, during 2005. The reef site is located in Stump Sound, near Holly Ridge, and the living shoreline site is Morris Landing, also in Holly Ridge. In the fall and in the spring, Dixon students monitored water quality, created footprints of both sites, and took detailed data of any living plants or animals found. Since NCCF is responsible for monitoring these sites for two years, all information and data collected are very important.  Students have also helped cleaning the Morris Landing site on numerous occasions.
