Learn Today . . . Stewards Tomorrow

by Anita Lancaster last modified 09-12-2006 09:09

Croatan High School, located at 1 Cougar Lane in Newport, is a public high school open to 9th – 12th grade students. Sheila Moore and Jim Butler, biology and marine science teachers, believe outdoor field work to be the best way for high school students to learn. Many of the students helping the Coastal Federation are interested in pursuing marine science or biology in the future. Croatan High School was involved in NCCF’s oyster restoration program for the first time during the 2004-2005 school year.
Students from Croatan helped monitor three oyster reef sites in 2005-2006. One reef site is located in Williston Creek in Williston, and the other two in Hoop Pole Creek in Atlantic Beach. In both spring and fall, Croatan students monitored water quality, created footprints of the sites, and took detailed data of live oysters found in each reef. Since NCCF is responsible for monitoring these sites for two years, all information and data collected are very important.
