Cape Lookout Marine Science High School, located at 1108 Bridges Street in Morehead City, is a small charter high school with a focus on marine science. Charles Elliott, head of the science department at Cape Lookout, works to involve his students through restoration projects and since Cape Lookout focuses on marine science, oyster and marsh restoration fit well into the curriculum. Cape Lookout students have helped plant trees at North River Farms in the past, and were the main participants for an APNEP grant during 2005.
The 2005 grant required students to bag oyster shell, visit Carteret Community College’s aquaculture facility, and move set oyster bags to a new oyster reef in Hoop Pole Creek. The students also participated in classroom activities and lessons to prepare for the oyster work needed. The students were professionally taped throughout their experience by Marine Graphics and an educational video is being made about oyster restoration. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of this video or having a teacher training on oyster education, please contact Sarah Phillips or call her at 252-393-8185.
