Frank Tursi was the second of the three COASTKEEPERS® that the Coastal Federation hired. A longtime environmental journalist in North Carolina, Frank joined the Federation in January 2002. He works out of the Federation's headquarters in Ocean in Carteret County. Frank is the project leader for the COASTKEEPER® program. |
- Territory: Tidal creeks and rivers, sounds, barrier islands and near shore waters along the central coast from the New River Inlet near Jacksonville to the southern end of Ocracoke Island, covering about 1,200 square miles of water. The territory includes 150,000 acres of estuarine water and almost 200 miles of ocean shoreline. It adjoins the Federation's Cape Fear COASTKEEPER® territory to the south and the territory of the Cape Hatteras COASTKEEPER® to the north.
- Duties: Monitoring beach renourishment and dredging projects; seeking out illegal wetland ditching and draining activities; following stormwater projects; establishing a volunteer monitoring network; responding to citizen reports of environmental problems; and implementing a program to educate various groups about the value, tools, and techniques for protecting and restoring the coast. The KEEPER® is patrolling by boat, airplane, canoe and truck.
How You Can Help
- Volunteer to conduct land use and water quality monitoring in the Cape Lookout coastal area: We'll train you in techniques, data/information recording and reporting to the appropriate agency.
- Volunteer in the headquarters office: We need individuals with good communication and people skills to help answer the phone, assist with correspondence, and conduct research, filing and general office duties.
- Agency Contact Information: We need you to help protect water quality and habitats by contacting State Agencies when you see a violation.
