![]() | Mike Giles is the second Cape Fear COASTKEEPER®, replacing Ted Wilgis, who moved on to a part-time education position with NCCF while he attends graduate school. Giles was named the Cape Fear COASTKEEPER® in May 2006 and is on the job covering the tidal creeks, sounds and near shore waters from the New River Inlet near Jacksonville to the Little River Inlet near Calabash. He is working out of the Coastal Federation's Wilmington field office. |
- Territory: Tidal creeks, sounds, barrier islands and near shore waters from the New River Inlet near Jacksonville to the Little River Inlet near Calabash, covering 100 miles of ocean and 1,000 miles of estuarine shoreline. The territory abuts the Cape Fear River and New River KEEPERS® territories.
- Duties: Monitoring beach renourishment and dredging projects; seeking out illegal wetland ditching and draining activities; establishing a volunteer monitoring network to cover tidal creeks, sounds and barrier islands of the Cape Fear Coast; responding to citizen reports of environmental problems; and implementing a program to educate various groups about the value, tools, and techniques for protecting and restoring the coast. The COASTKEEPER® is patrolling by boat, airplane, canoe and truck.
How You Can Help
- Volunteer to conduct land use and water quality monitoring in the Cape Fear coastal area: We'll train you in techniques, data/information recording and reporting to the appropriate agency.
- Volunteer in the Wilmington Field office: We need individuals with good communication and people skills to help answer the phone, assist with correspondence, and conduct research, filing and general office duties.
- Agency Contact Information: We need you to help protect water quality and habitats by contacting State Agencies when you see a violation.
