Ladd Bayliss began work in January 2012. She is a native of the Outer Banks.
Territory
Tidal creeks and rivers, sounds, barrier islands and near shore waters along the northern coast from the southern end of Ocracoke Island to the Virginia state line and inland. The territory includes 125 miles of ocean shoreline, the entire Pasquotank River basin (an area of 3,700 square miles), the lower Chowan River and the Lake Mattamuskeet region. It adjoins the federation's Central Region territory to the south.
Duties
Monitoring beach re-nourishment and dredging projects; seeking out illegal wetland ditching and draining activities; patrolling the territory by boat, airplane, canoe and vehicle; commenting on major environmental permits; following stormwater projects; responding to citizen reports of environmental problems; collaborating with local government and businesses on projects to protect and restore water quality; and implementing a program to educate various groups about the value, tools, and techniques for protecting and restoring the coast.

- Become an Advocate. Attend a meeting. Write your legislator. Be Heard. Sign up for the Coastal Area Action Network to be alerted about issues facing the coast.
- Become a Member. Also consider joining the N.C. Coastal Federation to help support the Coastkeepers’® work.
- Report Pollution. If you spot dead fish floating in the water, spy an oil slick or see or smell something on or near the water that doesn't seem right, you can call the Coastkeeper® or you can fill out and send her a Pollution Report.
