Bio
Frank joined the federation staff in January 2002 as our second Coastal Advocate. He was a newspaper journalist for almost 30 years – the last 23 at the Winston-Salem Journal where he was the environmental and special-projects reporter.
Territory
Tidal creeks and rivers, sounds, barrier islands and near shore waters along the central coast from the New River Inlet near Jacksonville to the southern end of Ocracoke Island. The territory includes 150,000 acres of estuarine water and almost 200 miles of ocean shoreline. It adjoins the federation's Southeast Coastal Advocate's territory to the south and the territory of the Northeast Coastal Advocate to the north.
Duties
Monitoring beach re-nourishment and dredging projects; seeking out illegal wetland ditching and draining activities; patrolling the territory by boat, airplane, canoe and vehicle; commenting on major environmental permits; following stormwater projects; responding to citizen reports of environmental problems; collaborating with local government and businesses on projects to protect and restore water quality; and implementing a program to educate various groups about the value, tools, and techniques for protecting and restoring the coast.
How You Can Help
- Stay Informed. Learn about the current issues along the central coast.
- Become an Advocate. Attend a meeting. Write your legislator. Be Heard.
- Become a Member. Also consider joining the N.C. Coastal Federation to help support the advocate's work.
- Report Pollution. If you spot dead fish floating in the water, spy an oil slick or see or smell something on or near the water that doesn't seem right, you can call the Coastal Advocate or you can fill out and send him a Pollution Report.
