Last summer, the North Carolina Coastal Federation partnered with Mano al Hermano for its Summer Literacy Project. Through funding from the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, the federation provided three books with coastal themes to students. Volunteers in the community spent time reading to them and going through the books with them. In August, students joined federation staff on a field trip to Jockey’s Ridge to plant marsh grass, explore in the water with nets and buckets to identify marine animals and learn about Dare County’s coastal habitats.

This summer, students from the Mano al Hermano program will again join federation staff on a field trip on Aug. 12. If you are interested in volunteering at the field trip, please contact Sara Hallas at sarajh@nccoast.org or (252) 473-1607.
